Abstract

Cedrela odorata is the second most important wood species in Mesoamerica, from its high quality timber. Particularly in Mexico, the present situation of their populations in all its distribution area is uncertain. The aim of this study was to determine the conditions in which cedar is, in regard to the sites where it is found (in 15 states of the country and 67 sites), variability in mensuration, attack per cent of Hysipyla grandella. Data included tree number, geographic coordinates, name of municipality, altitude, normal diameter, total height, stem height, presence or absence of borer attack, as well as site characteristics. Coordinates were recorded by a GPS and were input to ArcView 3.2. ESRI, Geographic Information System. Results show that natural populations at the north are very small or at inaccessible places. At the Southeast, the specie does not exist any more under natural conditions; there are trees in yards, urban areas and commercial plantations. The analysis statistics about mensuration revealed significant differences (p<0.05) among municipalities within the states and among states. The mean percentage of presence was % 80.5 nationality of H. grandella.
