Abstract

The effect of different environmental conditions during the pre-conditioning phase promotes mechanisms of drought resistance in trees after planting. During 13 days an experiment was performed with seedlings, aged seven and a half months at the beginning of evaluation. Factors evaluated were: 1) at the nursery; 2) shade mesh at 70 %; 3) shade mesh at 60 %; 4) shade mesh at 50 %; and 5) outdoors, under a totally randomized experimental design. An influence of environmental conditions on seedling growth was found; the highest seedling quality was obtained under outdoor conditions and shade mesh at 40 % and 60 %, which showed similar results in the morphological variables root collar diameter (4.53, 4.52 and 4.30 mm, respectively) and Dickson’s quality index (0.39, 0.37 and 0.36, respectively).
