The characteristics of the equipment and the processes operative in the plywood industry in the metropolitan area were analized.
The plants surveyed (seven milis), ali have log supply problems related to quantity, quality and time delivery according to the industry needs. Log debarker process is carried out with hand tools, exceptfor one mili. Log softening schedules are not well define regarding timetemperature for species and log characteristics.
Dueto the age ofthe lathes, most ofthem lack the latest innovations that allow hlgher veneer recovery and veneer quality from each log. Further more, since there is no balance between the lathe and other machine centers, its production capability is usually reduced to even 70%.
For veneer drying, three types heat transfer of kilos are used: direct combustion, thermal oil and vapor, being the latest one the most comrnon. No moisture content controls are used in any ofthe kilos, causing veneer surface inactivation problems, specially in the direct combustion ones.
The production capacity ofthe press varies between 5 to 20 panels, and the pressing time is also widespread, even for similar type ofboards. One aspect in comrnon in ali the mills is the hand loading and unloading ofthe press. The equipment for trimming, sanding and finishing of the panels, is adequate and in balance with the rest of the production process.
