Abstract

The yield of com was studied under the effect of two types of shelterbelt which have different forest species and dimensions, and different relationship with other near shelterbelts. Eight different fields of com were evaluated, four fields by type of shelterbelt, two at windward and two at leeward. The sample plots of 2 m2 were located at eight different perpendicular distances (H) from the shelterbelt (1,3,6,9,12,15,18 y 21 times the height of the shelterbelt), which represent the treatments ofthe analysis ofvariance, each series is repeated four times on the widht of the corn field. The experimental design was at random. An analysis of regresion was done to recognize the relationship between the corn yield and the distance from the shelterbelt. Statistical difference was found in 5 of 8 com fields. The analysis of regresion proved that the yield is reduced when it is separated of the influence of the shelterbelt at lee and windward. In shelterbelt that presented a secundary shelterbelt, the corn yield increased again. The field of com was compared with and without the in:fluence ofthe shelterbelt, including the loss of land to cultivate, and it was shown that the excesive width of the shelterbelt do not compensate the loss of land to cultivate in spite of the increase of corn yield, although, when the width is reduced, the increase of com yield do compensate the loss of land to cultivate.
