Abstract

The composition of the epiphytic flora of Jalisco is only partially known; therefore, the present study renders a preliminary inventory of three sites: San Sebastián del Oeste, and Sierra de Quila and the La Primavera forest, two protected natural areas. The information was obtained by collecting and identifying botanical specimens, as well as from the literature. The similarity in the composition of epiphytes between the sites was estimated using Sorensen’s Index. Eleven families, 49 genera and 95 taxa were registered. Orchidaceae showed the greatest richness of species, with 51, followed by Bromeliaceae, with 19, and by Polypodiaceae, with 1. The most diverse genera were Tillandsia, with 14 species, and Encyclia, Oncidium, Prostechea, Pleopeltis, Polypodium and Thelypteris, with four species each. San Sebastian del Oeste shows the greatest diversity, with 34 genera and 62 taxa, whereas Sierra de Quila contains 16 genera and 35 species, and finally, Bosque La Primavera has seven genera and 1 taxa. Sierra de Quila and Bosque La Primavera show greater similarity in epiphytes. Six species are included in the Official Mexican Norm NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010 within risk categories; therefore, they require protection.
