The surface affected by mistletoes in the country is over one million hectares, with economic Iosses ofmore than 136 million new pesos.
The actual affected surface in Michoacan is not known, therefore it is necessary to take inventories; however, there is no background information with regard to which is the most efficient and economic type of site to assess infected patches of land; so, this is the main objective of this study.
The research was made at the San Juan Nuevo comunidad indigena, within the stand 22 of land and substand 38. First, limits were set for the patch and the census was taken, then a systematic sarnpling was made with two types of plots: a fixed-dimension plot (F D S), and a variable-dimension plot (VD S), at a distance between lines and points of 100 m. A basal area factor of 1 m was used for VD S.
Data taken at each sarnpling point were: species, D B H, leve) of infection and dominance.
The DBASE III program was used for data processing and the mean separation statistical analysis was the t Student one with matched parcels.
Results show that the substand is made up by three tree species (Pinus pseudostrobus, P. montezumae and A bies sp. ); by three types of ground and the infection percentage is over 50%.
