In order to measure the genetic variability among progenies to increase forest plantation productivity and, at the same time, contribute to the preservation of forest germplasm, results are presented for sac-chaca (Dendropanax arboreus Planch & Decne) and negrito (Simarouba glauca D C), native species of the state of Quintana Roo with potential to be used for forest plantations.
The seed source comes for selected trees located in the central and southem region of Quintana Roo. There are 20 progenitors of sac-chaca and 15 of negrito.
Each progeny is made up by 60 individuals reproduced by seed. The seed quantity per kilogram was determined in each progenitor and for the descendants thereof an analysis was made ofthe germination percentage and speed, as well as the total height and base diameter growth obtained at the tree nursey phase.
Results indicate that there are marked differences among the different seed sources, namely the number of seeds per kilogram, the germination behavior and the growth of plantules at tree nurseries.
From the indirect selection viewpoint, it is important to know if the same growth behavior of progenies continues once they are planted at the fiel d.
This will be cletermined when field tria) results are analyzed.
