Abstract

To evaluate the effect of different thinning levels on wood quality at severa! stem heights in two Pinus patula stands, wood samples were taken at three stem heights six years after thinnings were applied. On each sample, ring width, earlywood/latewood ratio and wood density were detennined separately for the growth rings formed before and after the thinning.
At both stands thinning significantly affected earlywood, latewood and total ring widths, as well as the earlywood/latewood ratio. Effects on growth ring traits were first noticed two years after thinning, mainly counteracting age effects on growth ring characteristics. Thinning effects were similar along all the sampling heights on the stem. Due to the reduction in latewood ratio, wood density was also slightly reduced (2-5 %) by thinning. Although there were no statistical differences, relative reduction in wood density was larger at breast height than at the other sampling points on the stem.
