Abstract

No single factor has been a greater cause of declines in wildlife populalions than loss of habital. A practical way to reverse that trend is ecological restoration. In this paper, a conceptual framework, based on the work ofMcffe and Carroll (1994), is proposed to be use as standard rcference in future projects for restoration of wildlife habitats. A definition of basic restoration concepts, a discussion of the role of restoration on conservation, basic concerns of restoration projccts, such as the final product, feasibility and authcnticity, scale and costs, are prescntcd; the rcstoration process is discussed bascd on concepts of natural succcssion. Finally, examplcs are given on restoration efforts of tcrrcstrial and aqualic ecosystcms illustrating severa} problems, approaches, and scales. Ecological restoration is key for conservation of biological diversity and natural resources in disturbcd arcas outside natural protected arcas.
