Abstract

The study of the dynamics that occurs after the natural or induced disturbance has gained a growing interest. mainly related to ecological patterns and processes. This phenomenon of succession gives place to second growth forests which are of great importance since they constitute most of the existing forests in the tropics. This is why, the objective of the present study was to evaluate the density, height and cover of the regeneration (individua Is of 1 cm in Diameter at Breas! Height) of the species present in disturbed areas (gaps), produced by the harvesting of mahogany (Swietenia macrophylla King) in the evergreen seasonal of the Ejido (communal ownership) "X-hazil y Anexos" in the State of Quintana Roo. In circular plots of 2m', the 1983. 1987, 1991 and 1995 areas of forest harvesting were sampled. Treatment 1 corresponded to lile disturbed areas (gaps) and Treatment 2 (control) to the undisturbed adjacent areas to each of those gaps. The results showed a density, height and cover without statistical significant differences, between the two treatments.
