Wood machining behaviour in planing, boring, sanding and turning operations was assessed in wood from trees of Quercus affinis and Q. crassifolia colected in the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. These operations were tested according to the American Society for Testing and Materials Standards (ASTM D 1666-87), using chip marks of 29.3 and 16.9. However, the aforementioned standard was modified for planing and sanding tests. Results showed that wood of Q. affinis was excellent for planing, using cuting angles of 15, 20 and 25º for both tested chip marks (29.3 and 16. 9). Similarly, wood of Q. crassifolia showed excellent planing in cutting angles of 15 and 20º, while the cutting angle of 25º produced good and fair planing grades for chip marks of 29.3 and 16.9, respectively. The wood of both species showed good turning grades at moisture contents of 16 and 8%. Boring operations was excellent in wood from both species with spindle speeds of 1300 and 2460 r/min, although shaping was fair for both species, but grades diminished due to torn grain when cutting was changed from cross to longitudinal grain. The wood of both species also was excellent for sanding purposes.
