Abstract

This study was carried out to determine the chemical composition of tour Mexican oak species: Quercus coccolobifolia, Q. durifo/ia, Q. rugosa and Q. oleoides. Samples of sapwood, heartwood and a mixture of sapwood-heartwood were taken from each species and used to determine contents of cellulose, pentosans, lignin, ethanol-benzene extract, hot water extract, ash and tannin. Bark tannin content was also determined for each species, as well as pH-value of wood. In general, the cellulose content was in the range of 46 18 to 52. 94 % The amount of pentosans was from 19.08 to 20.61 %. Lignin content was between 20.40 and 23.35%. Extractive content was between 1.02 and 4.83% for ethanol-benzene extract and from 4.35 to 9.07% for hot water extrae!. Ash content ranged from 0.36 to 0.76%. Tannln content was between 0.29 and 2.16% for wood, and from 5.48 to 7 18% for bark. The pH-value was between 3.94 and 5.10 for the stirring method and from 3.51 to 5.22 for the hot water method. Analysis of variance of the data showed a slgnlficant difference (p < 0.05) between species and sample type for the chemical components. When the species were divided into red and white oaks, contents of hot water extract, wood tannin and bark tannin did not show any significant difference between both groups.
