The State of M1choacan has a broad area of temperate cold forests as well as medIum height tropical rain forests and tropical dry forests that, as a whole, cover 2 2 million ha that still ex1st, in sp1te of a 700 thousand ha loss during the last 20 years. One of the most important forests belong to the "Sierra Purhépecha" wh1ch has 680,000 ha and 1s located in the Central-West part of the state. The main environmenta1 probtems that have come from the loss of treeland are: deforestation that has affected 119, 615 ha (17 .60 per cent of the region); b1odIversíty and habítat loss: wildlife decrease; low quality of the remaining woods; soil eros1on; water spring exhaustion; hydric flow reduction; water pollution from agrochem1cals as well as from urban and industrial debris, change in land use, advance of the agriculture borders, and forest land fragmentation. Thus, commercial forest plantat1ons can be a strategy to restare the territories that have severe ecolog1cat problems; the purpose of this paper is to analyze sorne environmental, technical, economic and social aspects in order to carry out forest plantations projects in this region.
