Bark beetles of the genus Dendroctonus are causal agents of natural mortality in conifer communities. These insects participate in primary ecological processes such as plant succession, energy flow and nutrient recycling; on the contrary, they cause significant economic losses in timber production. The present study was conducted with the objective to know the population fluctuation of Dendroctonus mexicanus under two forest management conditions in Michoacan, Mexico. lt was carried out on two forested areas, one with silvicultural management (Nuevo San Juan) and the other without silvicultura! management (Parque Nacional Barranca de Cupatitzio). On each study area, three stands were selected and two Lindgren funnel traps per stand, baited with frontalin and alpha-pinene, were installed. Pheromone lures were replaced every 45 days and insects collected every two weeks. The study lasted for 22 months (from March 2004 to December 2005). lt was found that frontalin plus apha-pinene attracts D. mexicanus. lts relative abundance was higher in the area under management. This species presented a well defined dispersion peak from April to June and another less clear peak from October to December.
