Abstract

The lack of wood desintegration industries or energetic harvest industries in Cuba favors the accumulation of sawmill and other factory residues at these centers, until problems such as saturation of the available spaces, environmental pollution and thus, their effects upon human health of the people from the neighbouring towns, make it necessary to take these products to deposits. The purpose of the actual study was to estímate the sawdust production of two saw milis at western Cuba (Pinar del Río); thus, 200 trunks were selected: 50 prior to sawing of each of the three lines of La Palma Forest Enterprise, which hac diverse machinery and is represntative of those present in the area, and 50 from the La Jagua sawmill. The diameter of the trunks varied from 14.5 to 32 cm and their length from 3.5 to 4.00 m. A statistical analysis was made in order to determine the predictive equations through lineal regression models, in which sawdust volume was the dependent variable and the trunk diameter was the independent variable for each of the sawing techniques tested. From the production levels during the years of study, the sawdust volume of Pinar del Río was 14,303,02 m3 per year, which mea ns around 3.011 tons for transportation.
