En la Declaración de Durban (Congreso Forestal Mundial, 2015), se resaltó el papel de los bosques para el cumplimiento de la Agenda 2030 para el Desarrollo Sostenible, a partir de las siguientes premisas:
Los bosques son fundamentales para alcanzar la seguridad alimentaria, ya que proveen a la sociedad de alimentos, dendroenergía, lugares de resguardo, forrajes, fibras; por lo tanto, son una fuente de ingresos y de empleo, además coadyuvan al ejercicio de una agricultura sostenible, mediante la estabilización de los suelos, del clima y la regulación de los flujos de agua.
Los bosques bajo manejo aumentan la resiliencia tanto del ecosistema como de la sociedad, lo cual favorece el aprovechamiento máximo de su función como sumideros y almacenes de carbono al mismo tiempo que proporcionan otros servicios ambientales. Razón por la cual son una alternativa de solución a los problemas relacionados con el cambio climático y a la mitigación de sus efectos.
