Agroforestry systems of coffee production have a high potential for carbon sequestration because of the diversity of firewood species used as shade. The objective of this study was to assess the sequestered carbon in aboveground firewood biomass of Inga junicuil in coffee agroforestry systems of San Juan Tepanzacoalco, Ixtlán, Oaxaca State. Moreover, the relationship between sequestered carbon and physiographic (slope and altitude) and edaphic variables (electric conductivity, organic matter content, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium and calcium) were studied. Sixty-square sites of 100 m2 were sampled at random in a 120 ha area. Mensuration data and C content in firewood tissues were obtained in order to quantify sequestered carbon. On the average, the volume of firewood biomass of stems and branches was 3.09m3site-1; with specific gravity of 0.51 g cm-3 and 157.6 Mg ha-1 of firewood biomass. Carbon makes up about 40.8 % of firewood biomass, which stores an estimated 64.3 Mg C ha-1. The most influential variables in the carbon content of this species were the slope and altitude of the site, age of the coffee plantation, electrical conductivity and soil depth.
