Abstract

In order fo assess the romposition, abundance and richness of natural regeneration in relation fo open and closed pile-oak forest i1 regard fa lragments  al dillerent  sizes alopen and closed canopy pine--oak  forests, forest patches were delined using a digital vegetation map and a geograpHc nformation sysfem Upon Sierra de Ou1a protected area 1l4l km'), 85 ronrentrtc samptng plots c/YJJand  lCXl rri' were established lar the inventary of adult trees and natural regeneration. Accarding to lragment size, in the open lorest were lound lrom 7 fa 14 species, and 855 as average number alseedlings per hectare in lragments lrom 10 fa 50 ha and 3,065 trees in lragments over the last size; whereas, in closed forest, lrom 14 fa 18 laxa were  found and  4,060 young trees in 10 fa 50 ha plots and 1,229 lragments in the area aver 50 ha,wfich shthe highest diveo;ity numbers Richness al species diminishes in bath types and lragment sizes. lt is suggested to incUde in the oonservation and management  program  for the protected area, as a priority  action, to increases the connectivify between the lragments through propagation programs with native species and reforestation or other activities in regard to the oonservation and restoration of forest cover.
