Los bosques y los árboles mejoran y protegen el paisaje, los ecosistemas y los sistemas de producción; brindan bienes y servicios que son esenciales para la supervivencia y el bienestar de toda la humanidad. Los recursos genéticos forestales (RGF) son el material hereditario que se encuentra dentro y entre las especies arbustivas y de los árboles que tienen un valor social, científico, ambiental o económico real o potencial. Los RGF son fundamentales para los procesos de adaptación y evolución de los bosques y los árboles, así como para mejorar su productividad.
Se espera que la población mundial actual de 7.2 mil millones alcance 9.6 mil millones hacia el año 2050. Junto con el crecimiento poblacional, se estima que aumentará también la demanda de energía y productos derivados de la madera en 40 % en los próximos 20 años. Asimismo, habrá un incremento en la demanda de diversos bienes relacionados con el ámbito forestal: alimentos, medicamentos, forraje y otros productos básicos.
