Abstract

Under certain conditions, plantean be utilised as site quality indicators, they have been used as such in severa) countries. The present study was carried out in the Tapalpa mountains, in an area of 825 ha. testing in systematic way 202 si tes of circular shape and 1 000 m2 each, collecting the three plants (herbaceous and/or shrubbies) more abundant in the site, giving to them the values of 1, 2, or 3 according to their abundance in the site.
In order to perform the statistical analysis, the method of the coefficient of correlation of Kendall 's range was used, being this a method of non-parametric statistical analysis. The variables used were the abundance of plants and the site quality (estimated previously, trough site indexes by Benavides, op.cil.). Under the same method, there were analysed sorne factors concerning the surrounding enviroment of the site, such as: height over the sea level (h.s.l.), its position in the slope, degree of slope, exposure and weathering, using as variables the abundance of plants and the mentioned factors.
In the area, there were found 15 herbaceous species and 7 shrubbies, from which 8 herbaceous and 4 shrubbies were analysed. The results of correlation of the abundance of plants with the site quality were not significative, therefore neither species was considered to be an indicator ofthe site quality. Concerning the results ofthe factors of the surrounding enviroment, sorne relationship was found, mainly with the slope, position in it, and wheathering. The preference of sorne species for the shady areas, open spaces or weathered places was detected, as well.
