Abstract

The present paper shows the results of a classification and ubication of areas according to their tire risk. This study took place in the Tapalpa mountains, Jalisco; the gathering of data was carried out in 1988 and the information processing in 1989, in 49 landed properties (grouped in 8 sets), within 8 068 ha. In total, 2 900 si tes were tested. In order to perform the classification acording to the fire risk, the following parameters were considered: topography, debris, vegetation, fuels, services, litter, agricultura! activities, poultry activities, and weather.
According to the information, three indexes offire risk were assessed (i.e. low, medium and high). The si tes were sorted out according their index offire risk, thus obtaining the surface and position of each area. The results show that 39. 7% corresponds to a low index, 38.4% to a medium index and 21.8% to a high index.
It is concluded that the areas which require inmediate attention are the field sets of "El Carrizal", "Las Animas" and "Las Piedras", due to the fact that these areas have a high amount of flammable material, combined with a very accidented topography. lt is recommended the practice ofcontrolled bumings and the removal offlammable material.
