Abstract

This study describes and analyses international rosin and turpentineproduction, consumption, export and import, through a time series from 1968 to 1987.
A trade off between producing and importing countries is presented. Regression models are developed for demand for rosin (import), in 14 countries; using as explanatory variables: the prices ofrosin, income per capita, population growth rate, interest rate, and the price of substitutes, i.e. price of oil and/or price of soybean oil.
Elasticities are computed to relate the response of rosin import to a percentage change in the explanatory variables.
An analysis has been made to determine ifthe production oftall oil rosin is related to the price of the product, income per capita, and price of a substitute.
Mexico is described within the context of the gum naval stores world market framework, and special emphasis is given to domestic consumption and export of rosin.
