Abstract

A phytoecological survey was made in the fir (Abies religiosa [HBK] Schl. & Cham.) forest in Cañada de Contreras, in Magdalena-Contreras borough, located at the Southwest ofDistrito Federal, Mexico. The purpose ofthis study was bound to describe the floristic composition, as weJ! as the forest conformation and soil condition of this community in order to support further research works. Traditional field and analysis techniques were used.
Results show a community with a floristic diversity as expected, with dominance of Compositae, with species common to these forests in Sierra del Ajusco. Altitude distribution from 2,930 to 3,400 m, with a clear preference to cliffs over 30 per cent where the trees look more vigorous; irregular spacial distribution. over deep soils with rich organic matter, of sandY.-IOal!I texture, and 18% rocks average. There are few very large trees (35 m height) and a clear predominance of medium heights. No young trees were found in the lower strata. The most common injury observed was defoliation and lack of lower branches.
