Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the basic concepts of Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and the recomendations derived from the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales y Agropecuarias (INIF AP), experiences with these systems. The main precautions that must be taken in the selection and establishment of these systems are presented. Finally, perspectives for the future of these systems in Mexico are outlined.
