Abstract

The unregulated use of forest resources, the population and industrial growth and the problems associated to the environmental pollution, promote the reduction of wood production for pulp and paper manufacture and other wood products. Paper recycling has been seen as the solution for the lack of forest products for pulp and paper production. This study analyzes the possibility to improve the mechanical and optical properties of old corrugated container (OCC) pulps, through a stage of alkaline delignification by the soda chemical process. This treatment eliminates residual lignin and increases the flexibility and retention of water of the fibers, makes their bonding better and contributes to improve the mechanica: properties of the fiber material. The pulp obtained by this process is carried later to a subsequent elementary chlorine free bleaching (ECF) and totally chlorine free bleaching (TCF). The OCC pulp obtained through these treatments was evaluated according to the international test of TAPPI (mechanical resistance properties to the tensile, mullen, doubling and tear). Results showed that the OCC properties were improved, which justify the use of the delignification stage and support this process to produce an important source of bleached fibers for the manufacturing of various types of paper and linerboard.
