PRESENCIA DE NÓDULOS FIJADORES DE NITRÓGENO EN RAÍCES DE Casuarina spp. EN MÉXICO
Keywords:

Casuarina is an exotic genus that was planted in Mexico for the first time at the beginning of the XXth century. The ability to stand extreme ecological conditions as well as its natural multipurpose properties have led to its intense study. lts successful growth upon marginal soils is partly due to its association with Frankia, a nitrogen-fixing actinomycete that induces root nodule formation. In order to assess the root nodulation and to analyze the effect of environmental factors upon this phenomenon, several field surveys were carried out from the coast of the Gulf of Mexico to Mexico City (>2 000 m high). 106 sities were explored, where two species were found: C. equisetifolia and C. cunninghamiana; the first was more frequently observed. Results show that tree nodulation was not consistent; in 33 per cent of the trees, root nodules were detected, and their number varied very much. Among the environmental factors, altitude showed a strong effect upon the numbers of nodulated plants; 74 per cent of the sites with casuarine trees that bore nitrogen - fixing root nodules were located in O - 500 m areas.
