Abstract

The potential forest tree improvement through vegetative propagation techniques like seed orchards, with controlled pollinatien and clonal propagation, has to be properly used in Mexico. In some ornamental and protectional trees, the use of vegetative techniques, has been carried out for several centuries, due to the severa] advantages like reduction in growing time, and the genetic gain implied.
This paper was undertaken for backing up all activities related to plant propagation, specially for comercial production, genetic improvement and research. It were described the importance, advantages and disadvantages of vegetative propagation; the most common, advanced and advisable methods as stem rooting, grafts, aereal layer and propagation by low mount; they also deal with the perspectives ofvegetative propagation and its main lünitating problems, such as clonal monocultures and growth behavoring on vegetative material.
