The genus Quercus has a very broad distribution in Mexico with a great diversity of species, which make it an important wood resource. In arder to identify six anatomic characteristics of three species that belong to the subgenus Erythrobalanus also known as "red oaks", samples were collected in the states of Durango (San Dimas), Jalisco (Ciudad Guzmán and Mazamitla), Michoacán (Coalcomán and Villa Madero), Guerrero (Leonardo Bravo), Puebla (Chignahuapan and Tianguismanalco) and Veracruz (Huayacocotla). Sorne of them were given by INIFAP and sorne were collected by technical personnel of UAMIZ. Fourteen trees coming from nine sites were analized; thus, four belong to Quercus castanea, five to Q. crassifolia and five to Q. laurina. Results show outstanding differences of wood color, porosity, width and number of ray series, type and abundance of cell contents among and between species.
