A frequent problem in urban settlements is the damage caused by tree roots to urban structures, especially sidewalks and curbs. The lack of tree species selection to the planting place is among the main factors that prometes these problems, as well as the limited available space for tree root growth and the conditions and characteristics of the soil where the tree is developing. lt is important to recognize the response of urban tree species that promete damages, especially in such conditions as in Mexico City, where different kind of planting hales and species are used. The purpose of this study was to determine the damages to sidewalks and curbs produced by trees placed in street planting hales, using a random stratified sampling. Tree species were selected considering their frequency in the urban forest of Mexico City and 40 trees in three different planting hales categories of each species were sampled. The damage to the sidewalks and curbs was classified according to four types of damage. The percentage of trees in each species and planting hale size was analyzed. Tropical species like Erythrina coralloides and Ficus e/astica were founded that caused more damage than temperate climate species like Populus alba or Cupressus lindleyi. Small planting holes presented more damages than big planting holes, notwithstanding the tree species. Size of the planting hale but also tree species are important factors that have a great influence in the damage caused to sidewalks and curbs.
