NUEVA LOCALIDAD PARA Abies vejari Martínez
Keywords:
Fir, Abies vejari, coniferous forests, VeracruzAbstract
Upon taken the invento[)' to describe the features of a Pinus-Pseudotsuga-Quercus wood located in the Carbonero Jacales ejido, an "oyamel" species was found in "Arroyo El Salto" with strong differences when compared to the A bies religiosa species.
Samples were sent to the Herbario Nacional Forestal, Campo Experimental Coyoacán, IN I FA P, where the sample was identified as Abies vejari Martínez.
To ascertain whether this was a true new location, herbarium catalogs of other botanical research institutions in Mexico were reviewed. From this inspection the new location for A bies vejari Martínez was confirmed in the Huayacocotla, Veracruz region.
Four soil profiles were surveyed and their physical and chemical analyses showed that the soils in the area where A bies vejari was distributed are strongly limited as to their fertility, slope and stoneniness.
The mean rainfall per year is I 319.61 mm and the mean temperature is 13 ºC. A bies vejari trees show a mean height of 18.3 m and a average D B H of 25.5 cm.
Due to the characteristics of physiography, soil, climate and flora composition, the Abies vejari distribution area in the Huayacocotla, Veracruz region must be declared a reserve zone considering that in addition to this species there areothers such asPseudotsuga menziesii, requiring to be protected as very valuable genetic resources.
