Abstract

Prescribed bum is a cheap and practice tool in order to conscrvatc and improve forest resources. In Mexico therc are few cases of use of prescribcd bums. This is due to the unknowledgc of tire effects in mcxican foresl ccosystems. Thereforc. lhe subject of this work was to evaluate fire effects in a forest soil when prescribed bums ,vere applied. This work wAs carried out in a pine forest. at the Sierra of Tapalpa. Jalisco state. Mcxico. whcre both backing and head firc wcrc practiced. Six sitcs of 20 x 30 melcrs werc uscd, corresponding three repetitions for each type of bum. The burns wcre carried out in March 1991, Before and aflcr burning, soil samples were taken in ordcr to evaluate the cfTcct of fire on: a) organic mattcr. b) nutrients (calcium, potassium. magnesium. manganesc. phosphorus, nitric nitrogcn. amoniacal nitrogen). e) pH ,and d) tex1ure. Among thc most importants results. therc was a slight increase of organic mattcr: a slighl dimish of potassium, phosphorus and nitric ni1rogen: and a increasc of calcium. The efTect of rain is considerated too. Finally. 1hc conclusion is 1hat. thcrc werc not importan! changcs in soil after bums were practiccd.
